Neil Lewis

I am a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellow in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Exeter. The aim of my research is to develop a general understanding of the fluid flows that occur in planetary and stellar environments.

I have a particular interest in problems related to: large-scale atmospheric circulation (Earth and other planets); wave-mean flow interaction and the generation of zonal flows; turbulence in stably-stratified rotating fluids; and thermally-driven convection. My fellowship research is focused on the dynamics of Jupiter's weather layer. Prior to my fellowship, I held postdoctoral positions at Exeter under Prof. James Screen (atmospheric circulation response to Arctic sea-ice loss) and Prof. Matt Browning (dynamics of the Solar convection zone). I completed my PhD at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Prof. Peter Read.
